“IN EVERY dark cloud there is a silver lining”, this is a saying that rang true
for Madang Police last Friday.
In the last couple of months police in Madang have been heavily criticized by
members of the public including the business community for their inability to
respond promptly to complaints lodged.
One of the major factors contributing to this problem is the fact that they
continue to lack a lot of resources including vehicles.
Despite numerous pleas for assistance, these efforts had gone begging until last
Friday when during a public gathering organised by the Madang District Office at
Bates Oval, they were told they would be getting six vehicles to help in their
efforts to curb the escalating law and order problem.
The announcements were
made by Minister for Police and Madang Open MP Nixon Phillip Duban and Madang
Governor Jim Kas and in the presence of members of the police hierarchy
including the Acting Commissioner Simon Kauba and Madang Provincial Police
Commander Superintendent Anthony Wagambie (Jnr).
Messrs Duban and Kas had
stated police would receive a total of six vehicles, three from the Madang Joint
District Planning and Budget Priorities Committee and Joint Provincial Planning
and Budget Priorities Committee of which both are respective chairmen.
Mr Duban
in particular had reminded police that with the vehicles that they would be
receiving, they would be expected to respond to complaints in a timely manner.
The announcement lifted the spirit of the police officers, whose morale has been
at an all time low, particularly the Madang Provincial Police Commander
Superintendent Anthony Wagambie (Jnr).
Supt Wagambie said with the commitments
by Mr Duban that he would now be able to progress the concept of Sector Patrols
in the township.
