Teachers of a Primary School in the Western Highlands Province witnessed a momentous event last Friday when their students arranged a surprise celebration for them.
Students of the Engnui Memorial Lutheran Primary School in Mt Hagen entertained their teachers with a variety of creative dances, songs, presented poems written about them, even showering the teachers with gifts before serving up a delicious lunch for them.
The initiative, thought up and organised by the students themselves, on the day, made their teachers proud.
Western Highland Provincial Education Inspector Stanley Wantakson was also present for the celebrations.
The students lead by student leader, Habakuk Muwe said the students wanted to make their teachers happy and show their appreciation for taking them under their wings and teaching them.
Mr Muwe said the occassion was part of the World Teachers Day celebrations.
“The teachers are there in the classrooms with us everyday teaching us and what we the students of Engnui Primary did is to show our appreciation to them,” the student leader said.
Principal of Engnui Memorial School Yuyune Banake said his teachers and himself were surprised and at the same time delighted at the program organised by the students.
Mr Banake said what the students did was the first of its kind in the school but it was well organised and well done which made the teachers very happy.
“We the teachers were all entertained and excited by what our students had done for us,” Mr Banake said.
“The students practiced what we are teaching them in the classrooms, which is, to be better citizens and that is what they practiced when they appreciated us the teachers for our services last Friday.”
The students later prepared a nice meal for the teachers who were all in high spirits that day.
